The author of The I Hate Mathematics Book celebrates geometric shapes in this informative but visually cluttered addition to the Marilyn Burns Brainy Day series. Her main character, a triangle with gleaming black eyes and a perky grin, leads a full life-it can take the shape of a slice of pie or rest in an elbow's angle "when people put their hands on hips." Yet the triangle aspires to greater complexity, so it asks a "shapeshifter" to turn it into a quadrilateral (the shape of a TV or a book's page), then into a pentagon (a house's facade) and so forth. Burns fails to show that the triangle is "greedy"; it's just adventurous. But her story successfully introduces basic polygons, and her afterword to adults suggests ways of teaching children some of the finer points about geometry (e.g., the concept of a plane or rhomboids). For his picture book debut, Silveria chooses tart shades of yellow, orange, lavender and green. His airbrushed colored-pencil compositions have suitably angular details; speckled paint and multicolored doodles soften the effect but create a sense of disorder. If the art as a whole is somewhat jumbled, readers still come away from this volume noticing and naming the shapes of the objects around them. Ages 6-9.

When a triangle tires of having only three sides, he asks the shapeshifter to change him first into a quadrilateral, then a pentagon, a hexagon, and so forth until he realizes he is happiest as a triangle: he can hold up a roof, be a slice of a pie and, best of all, slip into place when people put their hands on their hips. "That way I always hear the latest news...which I can tell my friends." The text is clever and shows more than the usual places to find shapes?part of a computer screen, a section of a soccer ball, a floor tile. The acrylic and colored-pencil illustrations are colorful, abstract, and filled with smiling shapes done in shades of turquoise, pink, and yellow. Ages 5-8. The basic plot is as tired as they come: a little Whatever wants to be Something Else, but finally decides that being a Whatever is best after all. In this case, Burns give the story a geometric twist: a little triangle who's tired of being a triangle goes to "the shape-shifter," who adds one more side and one more angle, making the little fellow a quadrilateral. It soon grows tired of being a quadrilateral, though, and returns to the shape-shifter to gain another side and angle, and another, and another, until the poor little polygon is almost circular. Eye-zapping graphics, airbrushed acrylics with colored pencil, give the crowded pages some pizzazz. Burns' appended notes for adults discuss the terminology and concepts and suggest activities to increase children's understanding of geometry. Useful, perhaps, as a supplement to the math curriculum. Students in my class love this book!

I work in an inner city school. Believe me when I say that they are a tough group to please! They were absolutely enthralled with The Greedy Triangle! It opened up discussion in the class more than any other book I have read to them this school year. It is colorful, creative and fun. You can have the students use toothpicks and gummy bears to create the greedy little triangle and then change shapes as it metamorphisizes. Food is a great motivator. A fun way to instill a love of both reading and geometry. When the book is over, the kids can be "greedy" and eat their creations. Trust me, they will never forget the lesson.

About the Author
Stan Stojkovic (Ph.D., Michigan State University) is Professor of Criminal Justice and Dean in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he has taught since 1983. His primary teaching responsibilities and interests are in the areas of corrections, public administration, philosophy, delinquency, and criminology. His major research interest is in the area of correctional administration. He has authored or co-authored several other textbooks in addition to CRIMINAL JUSTICE INSTITUTIONS: ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT, including an introductory text on corrections with Rick Lovell. He has been a presenter at professional conferences, and his essays and reviews have been published in such journals as Pace Law Review and Criminal Justice Policy Review; a forthcoming essay on prison administration will appear in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CRIMINOLOGY AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. In addition, he has served as coordinator of the California Leadership Institute for the California Department of Corrections, and most recently as fiduciary agent for a High Intensity Drug Traffic Area Grant funded through the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

David Kalinich (Ph.D., Michigan State University) joined the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) community in 2002 as Chair of the Criminology/Criminal Justice Department. Dr. Kalinich served on the criminal justice faculty at Michigan State University for 18 years, and as Criminal Justice Department Chair at Northern Michigan University for six years. He also served as the criminal justice graduate school coordinator at Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids, Michigan, for three years before accepting the position at FAU. Prior to his academic career, he worked as an adult parole officer for a ten-year period for the State of Ohio. Dr. Kalinich has published a number of books and articles in the field and has an extensive background in planning and providing training programs to criminal justice professionals.

John M. Klofas (Ph.D., SUNY Albany) is Professor of Criminal Justice, Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice, and Director at the Center for Public Safety Initiatives at Rochester Institute of Technology. Dr. Klofas has worked in adult and juvenile probation in Massachusetts and served as a caseworker in the state's maximum-security penitentiary and as Director of Classification for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections. An active member of several professional CJ organizations, he reviews for a variety of journals and consults with national agencies on crime research and policy. Dr. Klofas is a founding trustee of Metropolitan Forum, a citizens group interested in analyses and solutions to community problems. His research focuses on criminal justice management, crime policy, prison and jail issues (including crowding), and metropolitan patterns of crime and justice. In partnership with Don Pryor of the Center for Governmental Research, Dr. Klofas received support from the National Institute of Justice for a project involving working with the local criminal justice system in strategic research efforts to reduce community violence. A 2012 grant supports evaluation of New York State's CeaseFire Violence Prevention program.

Worst book ever!

I have never been this disappointed in a book ever. All it has is other peoples arguments and not much interesting information. It was brutal to go through and I am so glad I can return this book. It has WAY to many references to names. Every other sentence is Blah Blah argues that and Blah Blah argues this. It is a bore and I would not recommend this book to anyone. If you have to take it for a class like I did then best of luck to you. The chapter summaries will not help at all for those professors who are looking for detail. I absolutely loath this book. I never again want to see it in my life. It was just that terrible of a read. Completely uninteresting and a great big bore. Way to much filler and not enough to the point content. I cannot stress to you how much unimportant garbage the add just to bulk up the book. It is utterly ridiculous and the authors are terrible writers.

Better than expected

Great shipping time and the "good" condition was actually more "like new" so I'm impressed that the seller didn't "over sale" the condition, but it was more "like new" than just "good." Thanks for being a good rater of condition so I get something that is above my expectations!

Come along with players on their journeys to the darkest, scariest parts of their minds and watch them emerge cleansed, whole, free, and (most importantly of all) LOVED by their play partners. Their role-plays may well be more effective than hypnosis or years of therapy on a shrink's couch. The authors feel their words do not do the experiences justice, but truly they are too modest.

I had the good fortune to meet Dossie and Janet at a Polyamory convention, having already read their classic "The Ethical Slut" which is far-and-away the best and most practical book about the dynamics of Polyamory. They are cool ladies who would be mistaken for ordinary vanilla if you didn't know otherwise. "Radical Ecstasy" is every bit as revelatory as "The Ethical Slut," opening up a whole new world for me.

At one point in reading it, I collapsed in cathartic laughter that made tears stream down my face, when I suddenly realized that I had always been fascinated with bondage games, even as early as age 8. My obsession with "Perils of Pauline" scenes became a source of enormous ridicule from my schoolmates, so embarrasing I never dared breathe a word of it to anyone for more than 30 years. At long last, Dossie and Janet proved that there was nothing wrong with me after all! I was merely trying to act out a logical resolution to the school-bully problem. My first-ever night at a BDSM club saw me tied to a St. Andrew's Cross while wearing the most demure, innocent, Victorian-vintage lace dress imaginable. Eventually, I might finally get to act out a resistance/takedown/rescue scene where I get chased all over the dungeon . . .

Take a Journey Inside Your Mind

This book takes a look at "altered states," BDSM and sacred sex practices and the route that the authors take to get to these "altered states." It is in some ways a journey the two authors made while writing this book to get to the core answer of "what truly is radical ecstasy." And yet the impression I get from reading this book is that what it truly is differs for everyone. Having been exploring alternate forms of spirituality over the past two or three years, quite a bit of what the authors speak of hit home for me. The book also has a number of vignettes of scenes the authors did with one another, their reactions and feelings during and after the scenes, as well as their use of breathing and visualization to reach "spiritual highs."

At times you may find the authors delving into areas that seem a bit hard to follow, but there will also be times reading about areas where you nod your head in acknowledgment. This is not a book for the "novice player," but rather for those who've been exploring consensual power exchange play for at least a little while and are looking for ideas or thoughts about how to make their scenes more spiritual.

Give me some of this religion already

These two ladies are for me the Lewis and Clark of the naked soul. In biker leathers flogger in hand they seem to go after that spiritual world that shows up sometimes when hot sex meets hot love. As a reader, this is quite a confession for me, a pretty much vanilla non-practicing BDSMer with a seminary studies background in mystical theology. I'm still somewhat surprised that this theme keeps showing up in what I read of late; this Divine Eros, even the Eros Maniakos spoken of by holy men of the monastic desert in the Christian East, men and women going all out for God. I see the same thread in Easton and Hardy except they are not afraid to have some naughty fun along the way. My spiritual side keeps coming back to their head scratching edgy sex, feeling strongly that there's a connection there that is almost religious and most certainly in touch with the Divine.

Such is the power of orgasmic bliss these two women explore in Radical Ecstasy. Theirs is a serious and athletic climb mixed in with heart-felt compassion and friendship and an intense desire for more that goes for both pleasure and healing at the same time. If you're like me, knowing for certain somebody dropped you off at this party broken and you'd like to leave whole, maybe this book is for you.

Both words in the title hooked me. Ecstasy? Radical? Give me both. And what of that Kundalini snake running up and down the spine of that naked lady on the cover? What's not to like here for the spiritual traveler? For the many neophyte kinkster voyeurs just tuning in around us, those who have ventured as far perhaps as having spanked a lover but once or twice as an experiment, this book will shock and awe perhaps. Yet so many are exploring now various doors into the realm dark eros, braving entrance into the leather world. Maybe this spiritual book is for those with a churchy past? And why not? Like many of us, my experience with dark side sex and kink has been the last ten awful years of a formerly good marriage. And many do come to the party as watchers rather than doers, the intrigue for many may well be the spiritual part as much as the edgy sex. And what could be more fun than coming to the game looking for steamy sex and finding God, too?

I've long identifying as a sensual person seeking a soul connection. Shadow work has kept my interest through the years as a bookophile starting back when I encountered Plato in his Republic in college. Indeed, shadow, shadow on the wall, which is the real and which is the illusion? Hardy and Easton explore this question cover to cover.

If you liked the extreme honesty and passion of Ethical Slut, you'll see Radical Ecstasy is equally honest. Both of them reference an erotic pursuit that is almost monastic in its severity. I've toured and retreated at many a monastery from California to the Middle East and find it not all that much of a stretch to see an Easton/Hardy connection with the intensity of fasting and asceticism found there. And also, oddly, in BDSM in general, not unlike for me are the severe activities of say, kneeling on a rock for a thousand days as saints have done. And why do spiritual folk do such severe things with their bodies, be they these authors or saints? Because they want at any price to be close, near to their Beloved, be he or she as lover human or Divine. Powerful for me was the devotion, friendship and spiritual pursuit found here in the deep relationship between these two women: it's the main pith of their tale.

If tears and sweat and howls and pain and naked skin mixed in with scare-the-crap-out-of-you fear of embracing the Divine makes you queasy, stay far from this book. These are two dangerous ladies. But let's say you've a wound or two that is painful and runs soul deep and you want real bad to reach that wound and find healing. And let's say you've got an open mind to what tools are permissible to add to your toolbox. Then read this book. But you've got to want to go deep. And you've got to be willing to not even care if you look good going there. Risk this book. It will give you some new religion to mix in with your old perhaps. I'd also read their excellent When Somebody You Love Is Kinky. If you've a serious spiritual side, you might just find that the particular someone in your quest is yourself.

paper 0-8071-2262-9 The seventh book by the retired Georgetown professor advertises itself truthfully: its easy-going, easily understood, and full of easy rhythms and rhymes. As the title poem about his happy marriage avers, how / easy it is, the times like this, when its simple. Flints plain and folksy verse stays true to its humble intentions: in short-line forms, ballads, odes, and elegies, he records moments of joy. Take the Moment: Thursday Aubade remembers a lyrical time in Perugia, on his wedding anniversary, with a worker singing outside; in Windfall from Edna Millay, hes amazed by an actual windfall of apples in a field; Strawberries like Raspberries describes the wonderful fruit of economically depressed Bulgaria; and Henry & June the Movie defends the sexiness of its female leads against criticism. Sex is often a laughing matter for Flint: Never Again Would Birdsong is a ditty about the link between laughter and orgasm, which Flint expounds upon at length in HaHa, a poem that plays on the Old English roots of the word laugh. Raised in the austere Midwest, Flint recalls his mothers difficult life in a few poems; and maintains a simple faith (And it was good) and a belief in the virtues of labor (Do You Have an Extra Saw). His ode to friendship (Pamela) is further supported by his own elegies for Tom, with whom he shared the ordinary passages of time. Flints humility doesnt prevent flights of fanciful glory: he prays for literary fame, since However small. The work is all. About the Author

The author of six previous books of poetry, Roland Flint was appointed Poet Laureate of Maryland in 1995. He has been awarded many resident fellowships at retreats for artists, most recently at Yaddo. He taught literature and writing at Georgetown University for thirty years.

An exuberant, finely wrought lexicon of laughter & grief

EASY is acclaimed poet Roland Flint's 7th book, and in a career marked by the rare marriage of multiplicity of style with knuckle-busting consistency of vision, this may be his most compelling collection to date. A native of North Dakota, Flint's plainspoken, masterful eloquence informs line after line, carefully measuring the liveliest, smartest, most sensual poetry of our day. He is more than partial to a laugh (see "Monkey House," "Land of Cotton," "Ah, Venus," "HaHa") -- he's stubbornly bent on laughter. His work possesses the cleverness of Roethke, the lyric, ingrained sensitivity to rhythm and occasional rhyme of Wright, the psychodynamic jazz of Matthews, the hard irony of Berryman. And that's merely the beginning. What stands out in poem after poem is the compassionately rendered, unsparing clarity of emotion -- whether of hilarity or piercing loss or both at once -- that without the poem had gone unnoticed, unrescued, unpraised, unredeemed. Take his characteristically precise and moving "Strawberries Like Raspberries," in which the poet recalls a trip to Bulgaria, where he tasted "the genius/ or luck of Bulgarian horticulture," especially in the country's strawberries -- "small, a delicately sweet dark red." He's learned just enough Bulgarian, from a communist text, to misconstrue -- for the varietal name of the fruit itself -- a local friend's comparing these strawberries with raspberries. Later, back in the states, the poet reads of the transition (or translation) from communism to capitalism, of the saddening kinks in the new food distribution chain, regretting all that wasted genius, and concludes: "... for a while, at least,/ the harvest will be only of fruit -- / bitterer than sour cherries --/ of what had been more deeply sown." EASY is replete with such poetry of harvest: in "Little Men Who Come Blindly," fathers reap what they've sown in their children; in "Seasonal, 1991," early spring in Bagdhad, following the Gulf War, brings from military triumph the mortal grief in "a season of heat and winds/ of cholera and typhus;" in "Pamela," adolescent love bears the fruit of enduring loyalty. These are poems ripe with their moments, coming off the page easily, of their own weight. Flint's earthy versatility calls to mind a maple on the plains in October, whose lower limbs still are green, whose middle branches are yellow, and whose upper leaves are orange-red: a single figure for loss, austerity, and an abundance of bright-hard laughter. EASY is a collection you will respect, and thoroughly enjoy in each of its many facets. Roland Flint will make you smarter at heart.

Joy Rediscovered

I have never been able to say this about any other book: I enjoyed EASY so much that I read it through twice in one sitting. Roland Flint is a writer of great heart who has suffused each of the thirty-seven poems in his new collection with quiet beauty. It is hard not to feel grateful after reading these poems, and most people will most likely also be more aware of the pleasures they take in daily life, the ones they might not readily recognize. In one of the poems in the book's third section, "Strawberries Like Raspberries," Flint describes the delight of eating a perfect pear in such clear detail that I immediately thought of a pear I had recently eaten and wished for another. Flint's language is always lucid, his lines and stanzas crisp like fall leaves, and there is sometimes an autumnal melancholy to his poems, e.g. "After the Spanish Mass with Nena," "Pamela," "Grief November," "Prayer." Others, however, are more celebratory: "Never Again Would Birdsong" and "HaHa" examine the link between laughter and sex, revealing that the two are often closely related. Still others amuse with anecdotes or mild wordplay: "Henry & June the Movie" and "Land of Cotton." This is a collection in which readers will rediscover joy. Praised be Roland Flint! Praised be!
