not another aromatherapy book

After so many scientific books on essential oils and aromatherapy, I found "strange smell in the car" so refreshing. The author speaks from experience, and he is no afraid to be politically incorrect. I could tell the passion for his craft. If you are working with essential oils, this book is a must.

Almost nothing found related to Chaos Magic !!!!!!!

My main purpose of buying this book was to find out how the author became involved in chaos magic. I thought that this book would include this information because at the back of the book it says “This aromatic and magical memoir comes to you from the pen of well-respected chaos mage and expert in aromatics Ray Sherwin.” Also, it says “….since this book is a kind of autobiography I have included two poems of an occult/pagan nature/Bibliography.”. Unfortunately, the author includes almost nothing regarding chaos magic. The only thing I found on the subject was on page 46 in which it says “I’d been introduced to the theories of Austin Osman Spare by Pete Carroll….”. Also, page 19 includes a picture with the comment “In the foreground is a pile of Formaos magazines. Formaos specialized in looking at the work and legacy of Austin Osman Spare”. From this, we can infer that the author was influenced by this personage too. Nonetheless, the book includes interesting information on aromatic oils. My rate on this book is based on my expectation on the topic of Chaos Magic but other reviewers may rate it higher based on aromatic oils and perfumery.

About the Author
Born in 1969 in the Netherlands, raised Roman Catholic, I studied Mathematics (1987-1993) and afterwards worked in Information Technology. In 1989 I converted to full gospel Christianity. I followed my own path, practically cut off from family and friends. I prayed God to show me His plan for my life for as long as I can remember. In 2001 I started to question my beliefs. This led to a crisis in 2006 that lasted for 2 years. In October 2007 I found a valuable reference that was mind-shattering and it changed my life forever. The question arose: "What now" This book is my heart-felt answer.

I have so much to say about this book, and yet trying to explain what it means to me is a task words seem incapable of accomplishing. Nevertheless, it gives me great pleasure to write a review of Bruno Curfs' first book, though even the word 'book' utterly fails to describe what is nothing less than a living revelation that has taken roots within my psyche as a result of this adventure. For what this 'book' represents is an original work of profound importance and timeless beauty, and what it contains is the clearest mirror you've ever looked into, providing answers to the deepest questions if you're willing to check your preconceived notions and prejudices and allow this book and its message to plum the depths of your soul and show you the true beauty of who and what you are in a world that is far more amazing than you've ever imagined. But beware, this isn't any ordinary book. No, this is something beyond words, yet it will open you to understand the Living Word. This book has transformed me in ways too numerous to describe, and the process has only begun. What is more, it is a process that has no conceivable end. I was meant to discover this book. How about you?

Sound too good to be true? Let me tell you that three years ago I would have laughed at someone like me talking or writing about anything spiritual or religious, but that's simply because like most people I was groomed to fear anything I didn't understand, and therefore ridicule it so as to mask my ignorance - and total lack of curiosity about the most profound writings bequeathed to humanity. Oh yes, my blindness was legion, yet I postured as someone who was certain that his vision was far better than that of most people. However, my inability to continue deceiving myself reached a breaking point as the pain, unhappiness, confusion, and lack of meaning in my life became unbearable. That was exactly three years ago, and at that time my solution was to journey into the bowels of the Peruvian Amazon to work with ayahuasca shamans. In short, that journey shattered my existence and blew my mind wide open in an unspeakably beautiful way, leading me to the Bible, a book I had never once even tried to read. In fact, anything related to "God" or religion was the very last thing I expected (or had any interest in pursuing) upon entering the jungle, and yet this was only the beginning of waking up and learning to always expect the unexpected.

I began reading the Bible, the lives of the saints, and eventually I went to Catholic Mass daily, bombarding the priests with questions. All I did was read book after book, unable to quell my curiosity or satiate my hunger for answers. After delving into Hinduism, Buddhism, mythology, science and New Thought/New Age works, I realized I wanted nothing to do with any organized religion or church, for I discovered that religion as it currently stands is a mold that must be broken, not conformed to. (As Emerson said, "A man must consider what a rich realm he abdicates when he becomes a conformist.") What had taken root within me was far too big to be contained by any institution or structure whatsoever, for my true essence was beginning to assert itself in ways that far exceeded rituals, dusty and formulaic teachings, convoluted myths, and literal translations of Scripture. I knew I was on to something BIG.

Then through my voracious reading of reviews on Amazon I found The Cipher of Genesis by Carlo Suarès about four months ago, and just as in the jungle almost three years earlier, a bomb was planted and detonated in my psyche. I had discovered Qabala (or did Qabala discover me?), and this led me to The End of Religion, The Beginning of Self by Bruno Curfs. Nothing could have prepared me for what Curfs had accomplished and set out to share with the world. I began studying this book almost daily two months ago, and my thinking has already been altered radically. What is more, after reaching out to the author via email when I first became aware of his journey and how much it resonated with my own, we quickly began a regular correspondence in which I asked countless questions, every one of which received a thoughtful response. I had literally been drawn in first by simply reading Curfs' extended bio. As if this beautiful book wasn't a wonderful gift in itself, being exactly what I was looking for after discovering Carlo Suarès, the author became an intimate friend and confidant, helping and teaching me in ways that have allowed me to help and teach myself.

Right away the reader knows that Curfs is writing from a point on the mountain you've only imagined or read about in some less-accessible book. But some may ask, "With what authority has a mathematician set out to write such a book?" Well, considering that the Hebrew alphabet is comprised of glyphs that are letter-numbers, his background certainly comes in handy when deciphering the code of the Old Testament. What is more, Curfs has a prodigious knowledge of grammar, logic, rhetoric, science, philosophy, and he possesses an astounding intimacy with the New Testament. Jesus was a Jew who taught in Hebrew, right? When you get down to the work of digging you learn firsthand how Hebrew can't be translated, for it is far different than our languages in the West. However, Hebrew isn't just a language to be learned but an energy to be experienced, and I say this as someone who has been penetrated by the letter-numbers. Once again, studying Hebrew was even lower on my list of things I imagined doing three years ago, yet here I am like a child during show and tell declaring my love for something I want to share with anyone who will listen, especially those searching for answers to the deepest questions.

Earlier I used the term 'work of genius' to describe this book, but as you begin to understand Qabala you come to realize that Curfs is simply letting you ride shotgun on his own personal journey, all the while revealing to you that what he has accomplished doesn't set him apart from the rest of us, because he goes to great lengths to teach you how to reach the same heights and insights, but in your own unique way. Curfs is a trailblazer, and he is so smitten with love for the Bible and words in general that he's left eloquent signposts everywhere you look. But instead of trying to get everyone to follow him on the path he's discovered he shows you how to open the Scriptures with the key of Qabala so that you can forge a path of your own, beginning at the root of your own heart where your own signs and interpretations will take shape. In short, Curfs has put together a tour de force that suffices to turn every student into a teacher. Not only that, but he cheers on and awaits anyone and everyone to join him in what he describes as a "merging" of souls in the One. I've probably read more than a thousand reviews on Amazon over the years, and while I owe countless reviewers for directing me to books that were extremely helpful on my own quest, I never once wrote a review of the innumerable works that eventually led me to Bruno Curfs. However, of all those books I poured through since my awakening in the Amazon three years ago, The End of Religion, The Beginning of Self is by far the most significant and powerful of all, for it helped me to unlock the mystery of the Bible, which is nothing less than a map of the human psyche and therefore a key to the emancipation of man. There is no book I can recommend more highly than this one, and I will be more than happy to respond personally to anyone who would like further information about why I stand so firmly behind this work and its author.

Rediscover a classic

A classic AD&D dungeon module, again available in a fresh printing. The 4 original modules are very playable, and the bonus dungeon #A0 is a newly published treat for long-time DM's who continue to play 1st edition rules. I hope Wizards reprints more of these 1st edition modules (perhaps "Temple of Elemental Evil").

There are a few drawbacks to this edition. Because of the reliance on black-and-white printing for the entire contents, none of the original cover art is reproduced, which is a bummer on the nostalgia level. At the level of play, the publication suffers because unlike the originals the maps are not printed on the back of a DM's cardstock screen. Which means the DM is constantly flipping pages to track the map and read the module. Not a fatal flaw, but this is what prevents the product from being 5-star.

Great additon to my premium reprints collection

I received my copy of the A0-A4 Against the Slave Lords premium reprint today, and after spending a couple of hours going over it, I wanted to give my thoughts.

Overall, it is the same style and quality as the S1-S4 reprint previously released. It lacks the gold leaf edging and the cloth bookmark of the original core book reprints (both features that I really enjoyed in those books), but is on the same heavier stock, glossier paper as the previous reprints.

Of course, what makes this reprint different than the S1-S4 book, is the addition of adventure module A0 (a prequel to the other modules) by veteran writer and game designer Skip Williams. This adventure is the only part of the book that I have had time to read in its entirety at this point, and the adventure is an excellent way to get low level characters connected into the plot of the slave lords. Alternately, I know TSR back in the day recommended using T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil as the jumping in point.

The A0 module has the "old school" feel, and the artwork is spot on with the art of the other modules from the early 80's. The bugbear on page 21 is an especially nice touch as it looks just like the bugbear from the original Monster Manual...only in an action pose. Another nice touch of the A0 module is that a new monster, the Mudtiger, is given at the end of the module with stats in the original Monster Manual format. The only complaint is that the maps for A0 are a bit compressed and small, but my old eyes still managed them without too much trouble.

Modules A1-A4 appear to have been reprinted in their entirety. It does not say if any errata was included, and I don't even know what errors may have occurred in the original printings. Hopefully they fixed any glaring mistakes, but I don't recall any from my old copies.

In the very back, WOTC included fan artwork that was submitted during development of this book, which was inspired by the original modules. I felt like this was a nice touch as well. Many of these amateur artists are very talented and draw with an "old school" feel.

Overall, I enjoy this book so far. I was letdown by the S1-S4 book, but that was in part due my expectations not being fulfilled. Knowing better what to expect (e.g.: no gold leaf or bookmark), this book better meets my expectations. WOTC addressed some of my concerns regarding the S1-S4 book by releasing PDF's of the maps and illustrations booklets on their website. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4dnd/sseriesbonus

I am hoping they do the same for this book (at least the maps) because it is not always easy to use bound in maps when playing. However, I still have my old modules and maps as backups for play...but not everyone will have those, when they buy this book.

Another Victory...

The new reprint of Against the Slave Lords certainly does not disappoint. Once again this is a quality book. The binding is solid and sturdy. The pages, however, lack the gold edging and there is no ribbon marker but that does not take away from the book. The cover matches the rest of the reprint series and looks sharp. Overall the design of the reprint series has been excellent. I love matching sets.

As for the content, the addition of A0 is a nice little bonus to get folks into the adventure. It is well written and certainly has the "old" feeling as the other modules. Also, the forwards of all the authors was a nice little piece of insight and history of their involvement in the modules. There was a nice inclusion of fan submitted artwork at the end of book which was cool to see. As for the original modules, they are there in their entirety, all crisp, clean, and easy to follow. The only problem, and this is a problem with all the AD&D reprints, is that some of the artwork is heavy and dark.

All in all, another excellent reprint to give your beleaguered books a day off.

About the Author
Buoye is associate professor of history at the University of Tulsa where he teaches courses on Chinese and Japanese history.

Kirk A. Denton is Associate Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Ohio State University. He is the editor of Modern Chinese Literary Thought: Writings on Literature, 1893-1945 (Stanford, 1996).

Bruce Dickson received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1994. He has been a Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at the George Washington University since 1993, where he also served as director of the Sigur Center for Asian Studies and the Asian Studies Program from 1998 2001 and the director of graduate studies in the political science department from 2004 6. He is the author of Red Capitalists in China: The Party, Private Entrepreneurs, and Prospects for Political Change (2003) and Democratization in China and Taiwan: The Adaptability of Leninist Parties (1997), as well as numerous articles.

Barry Naughton is So Kwanlok Professor at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, University of California, San Diego. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a non-resident fellow of the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC. He is author of many books, including Growing Out of the Plan: Chinese Economic Reform, 1978 1993 (Cambridge University Press, 1995, winner of the Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize) and The Chinese Economy: Transitions and Growth. excellent collection of writings

I'm going to China for the first time in a couple weeks. I have quite a few Chinese friends, and have an avid interest in the country's culture, history, government and people.

This book is simply fantastic. It's a collection of excerpts from larger scholarly works, as well as unabridged primary sources.

Let me just list some of the gems in this book:

Translations from the Chinese of articles/speeches/stories by Mao Zedong, Sut Yat-sen, Yu Hua, Lu Xun and other famous Chinese

Topics as diverse as: village elections, falun gong, chinese corporate finance, chinese philosophy, american views of china (not unilaterally positive by any means, the book includes plenty of criticism of ethnocentric Western views), mcdonalds, tabacco farming, qigong, women in china, migrant workers, education, homosexuality...

This book is a treasure trove of information. Absolutely a stunning survey of so many often-over looked and under-reported, both in scholarly books as well as newspapers (in the West, at least). I simply could not put this book down. It is written for the holistic reader, who wants a taste of everything about China, viewed as much from the inside as from the outside.

p.s. ignore the other one star review. The guy didn't even read the book, and has no concept of what the book was about. You can see my response to his review below.

"This is one of the more ridiculous comments I've ever seen. This book is a collection of readings written by dozens of different authors. It *is* chronological within the different Parts (Geography/History, Politics, Culture etc.). There are scholarly works by both Western authors and translated from the Chinese. There's even a *great* and beautiful collection of excerpts from famous Chinese authors (translated from the Chinese) such as Lu Xun and Yu Hua. This book, precisely because of it's wide range of authorship, provides an unparalleled survey of China. Other books I've read on China, such as Fenby's Modern China or Becker's The Chinese, are also insightful but definitely, as in any case where a single researcher writes a book, suffer from biases and limits of their knowledge. Don't even listen to this guy, he didn't even read the book."

Excellent text

This text is starting to get a bit out-dated, but it is an excellent collection of scholarly articles grouped by theme (politics, economics, society etc. etc.).

The scholarly articles represent a range of opinions, and they are obviously high quality and peer reviewed. If one is interested in a solid overview of modern China, with an introduction that briefly covers Chinese history, this is an excellent and thought provoking volume.

Fun, fun read

I just love this crazy “family”! In this next story in this series, it really is about Hannah and Diel dealing with her pregnancy (she’s a vampire, he’s a demon who is royalty…from Hell) and birth. What a wild ride! There are so many funny scenes but I don’t want to give away any spoilers. I loved how they had much trouble picking out names and really needled each other. And I really want to have a Djinn of my own! Aidan is also in this story, he is a friend of Diel’s after all, and he is so very handy with just about anything. I won’t tell what it was but almost at the end of this book he “helps” Diel deal with his parents (while they are staying in Hell) and geez, I could really use this guy. Read this book, enjoy, and laugh yourself silly. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I can honestly say it shouldn’t be missed.

A baby from Hell is not necessarily a bad thing.......

Pregnancy complications are just the tip of the iceberg in this latest tale about the Vampires of San Francisco. Hannah (a vampire) and Diel ( a Duke and a demon) are having a baby soon! Who will the baby look like? What will they name him or her? Everyone comes to the rescue as Hannah is confined to bed-rest in Hell. Even her in-laws come, but not to help. What a page turner! So many unanswered questions waiting in the next book - Hannah's little family, Lily & Sebastian's wedding, Aiden's new (lost) love. Thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the series!

Vampires and Demons Celebrate!

This was a wonderful reading experience! Great story! Always exciting when we visit Hell with all the vampires and demons! Hannah's birthing experience was meant to be exciting, fun, suspenseful, and unpredictable! McBrayer didn't let us down with this novella. It was so fun! I'm excited to find out about Aiden and Manda.....their story will continue. Can hardly wait. Oh, yes, thanks, Jessica McBrayer, for another sexy, fun and always exciting continuation of this terrific series!
