About the Author
Alan Hunter was born in Hoveton, Norfolk in 1922. He left school at the age of 14 to work on his father's farm, spending his spare time sailing on the Norfolk Broads and writing nature notes for the Eastern Evening News. He also wrote poetry, some of which was published while he was in the RAF during World War II. By 1950, he was running his own book shop in Norwich and in 1955, he wrote the first of 45 George Gently novels. He died in 2005 aged 82.

Good, up to date reference, but has flaws.

I bought this becuase I needed an updated text book for the PE exam. I was able to extract almost everything I needed from this book. I am glad I bought it and it's probably about the best you'll find. It has plenty of flaws although nothing I couldn't live with.

One thing I do not like is the overwhelming clutter on the pages with calculations. The information is logical and it's good, but it takes some staring to get used to it. Often times there are variables like Mu that are used to represent strength and load in the same step which is confusing. I found myself renaming a lot of variables becuase of that.

Keep an eye out for algebra errors. I wish there was an errata for this on amazon becuase I tend to find plenty of numerical errors and typos. Just be wary and double check the calcs.

My old text had flow charts for everything. This text does offer a summary at the end of each chapter. I'm a visual person and I had to draw up my own flow charts to consolidate the information in a logical manner so I can quickly go through designs by hand.

There are some subjects that are barely touched in this book that I really wished were included. There is little to no information on tilt-up panel design and shear walls. I have to turn to the SEAOC yellow book (3rd edition) for that.

MACRO CHALLENGES OF OUR COMPLEX WORLD & ORGANIZATIONS.

This book is bound to please anyone who wants to grapple with the complexity of today's world and organizations, and is interested in the truly big picture and issues.

Part I explains concepts central to complex systems, such as: parts, wholes and relationships; patterns; networks and collective memory; possibilities; and evolution. The second and major part of the book focuses on how we can apply complex systems ideas to help solve such major real-world challenges as: military warfare and conflict; health care (the system and errors); learning and the educational system; international development; enlightened evolutionary engineering; and global control, ethnic violence and terrorism. The first hurdle is to comprehend these problems using our knowledge of complex systems and then begin to address them using a complex systems framework.

The book is intellectually refreshing and bold. Its content is expansive, enlightening, and mind-stimulating.

One egregious math error made me question the whole damn thing

Dr Bar-Yam's book is a good examination of the problems of complexity and simplicity, and how they interact within a system environment. I found it an interesting read, in that it illuminates a series of general methods of thinking about systems and intra-system interactions. I get the impression this is all very basic systems engineering knowledge and the book has sparked my interest in the field, but as to this particular book I found several unfortunate errors in the book about peripheral topics that make me wonder about the work's examples as a whole.

The two that really caught my eye were an otherwise throwaway bit about Macedonian phalanxes that displayed some ignorance, and...

On p156, in the discussion on how easy it would be to drastically reduce medical errors with one fix, there's a horrible mathematical/probability error. It proposes a hypothetical ten-step process to medical procedures, with a 1% error at each INDEPENDENT step (this is important) leading to an overall ~10% chance of error [no error = (1-0.01)^10 = 90.4%] being applied to the patient. His easy solution is to introduce redundancy at just one step, making that one step's likelihood of error 1% of 1%, or 0.01%; which is a correct construction. However, he then goes on to say that this one adjustment would reduce the total, final chance of error to 99.9%... and this is TOTALLY INCORRECT. It's EMBARRASSING. Such an adjustment would make the final chance of error 8.7% [no error = (1-.01)^9*(1-.0001) = 91.3%], a relative reduction of 9% and an absolute reduction of 0.9%, not his calculated relative reduction of 99% and absolute reduction of 9.9%. He (apparently) incorrectly assumed that this one redundancy would reduce errors at all steps to 0.01%, rather than just one step, and this after stressing that these are independent events. He spends the next two pages talking about how this one single step would be so easy and current reduction methods are inadequate, when in actuality to get his proposed reduction of total error would take redundancies at all TEN steps, rather than at just one. This was the error that had me shaking my head and going back to re-read the passage about Alexander I'd passed over earlier.

It's difficult to stress how fundamentally WRONG this error is. This isn't nitpicking; the nature of following two chapters of discussions about errors and complexity hinge on understanding what are, and are not independent factors. To miss this through goodness knows how many rounds of proof-reading made me seriously question the mathematical underpinnings of what's being discussed throughout the entire work.

While overall the book was interesting, the errors above had me wondering how much of his discussion of systems application to the real world was actually relevant. The topic itself is an engaging one and I appreciate the numerous abstract discussions throughout, but I have serious doubts about the applications and proposed prescriptions for ailing systems that takes up the latter half of the book because I cannot be sure the author and his numerous colleagues and proof-readers understand what the heck they're actually talking about.

Interesting, clear, powerful

"Making Things Work" is one of those rare and to-be-treasured books which 1) addresses serious and difficult problems and 2) is an easy and interesting read.

Bar-Yam applies key principles of complex systems to many of the large and seemingly insoluble problems that we face as a society and gives us a reason to hope by providing new ways of understanding and addressing them. Bar-Yam's approaches are not simplistic panaceas. Implementation requires new ways of thinking and acting.

The only caution I have is that, for most people, it takes time and mental discipline to be able to use these powerful ideas effectively.

Success is a choice often hard-earned

After reading and watching Klaus Hempfling for a while, it's easy to start regarding him as having almost superhuman abilities. His impact on horses is so astonishing, and he speaks and writes on them with such authority and insight, that it seems he has always been, as a fortune teller once told him, "two-thirds horse!"

This book is an important reminder that Klaus is still very much human. When I look at Klaus today he seems to be a man in complete control of his own destiny, but he makes it clear in this book that there was once a time when he battled through dark episodes of uncertainty, self-doubt, self-pity, anger, anguish, despair and fear.

The Message from the Horse charts the period where Klaus made his first and most important breakthrough in really understanding horses, just a few short years before he published Dancing with Horses. Before this discovery Klaus struggled to connect to horses in a meaningful way or to understand them to his own satisfaction, and even came close to giving up on them altogether.

Unlike his other works in English, this "autobiographical narrative" contains no instruction on horsemanship. It reads more like a novel, although to my knowledge there is no fiction - it is a retelling of events as Klaus recalled them, without embellishment. For me it answered many of the questions I had about Klaus' past, and it provided insight and context to many of his comments in other books.

The events Klaus describes take place in a relatively short period in Spain, but it is clear that this is the most significant time in his life. We are with him as he begins his quest, as he meets his frightening stallion for the first time and as, exhausted and hungry, he finally encounters the wild horses. Of course, this book is about much more than horses.

For those who have followed Klaus for a while, and feel that he is sometimes cryptic or stingy with his instruction, be assured that Klaus went through something of an ordeal to learn what he did. He spends much of the book with an old monk who ultimately helps him seek out the message of the horse. But this cantankerous old monk gave little away, apparently spending more time ignoring, chastising or tormenting Klaus instead. Yet a lot of the monk's wisest words are echoed in Klaus' teachings today, and you soon realise just how generous Klaus is to his followers, sharing all he knows to those willing to listen and make the effort to understand. The monk's advice was presented to Klaus as a baffling puzzle - but today Klaus willingly gives us the solution.

I was surprised at just how much of a page-turner this book was. Klaus describes events succinctly - the prose is rich but without any unnecessary ornamentation or sentimentality. I can't comment on the accuracy of the translation, but it is pleasant to read, and the translator seems to have captured the same spirit and feel that comes through in the English translations of some of Klaus' other works.

Both horse lovers and non-horse people can enjoy and learn much from this book. If you are thinking about reading some of Klaus' works for the first time, this may be a good introduction. And for those who are familiar with Klaus, they do not need to read a review to know that they will probably love this book.

Most Excellent!

Great book! Ordered two, finished one and gave one to a friend. It is the story of a turning point in Klaus' life, and so much more... so much wisdom and guidance can be learned from reading this book. I have many pages marked to re-read. Klaus' wisdom bubbles up from day to day, continually encouraging and accepting at wherever we are on the path, we can take the next step. Highly recommended as one of my 5 best books!

Over the years as a student of KFH, I've picked up so many nuggets of life wisdom, not just horse wisdom. He's an amazing man and this book gives a lot of insight into how much of a struggle he had to go through to get on his life path and ultimate destiny.

Note that this is very different than his other books that are in the English language so far. It gives a lot of insight into his struggle to find his path when it was not so clear. Horses can be the ultimate test of a human. A lesson for all of us that to persevere on the Knight's way is often a challenging journey of inner growth and persistence. It's a must read.

Full of gems, deep insights. Very honest. Not, however, much insight to his true journey of self-discovery, but a great story well told nonetheless. I would like to read the sequel! (If there was one.)

An Excellent Resource for Practicing Teachers

It seems that a lot of books in the market on testing deal with the theoretical background of designing large scale tests on the institutional level. Those sorts of books are not so useful for the practicing teacher who is looking for a little guidance on improving their test writing skills for daily classes. This book is written with that teacher in mind. It doesn't overload the reader with loads of statistics, but if you are interested in the statistical basis of the ideas presented in this book, there is a section on statistics in the appendix.

Basically, this book is divided into three sections. The first section covers the different types of test a teacher might want to give and the differences between those types. The second part delves into the theory of validity and realiability, but doesn't overwhelm the reader with loads of numbers and figures. The third part goes into how to test different skills. The attitude the author takes toward testing is that a test should focus on one of the four basic skills: speaking, reading, writing, or listening. Grammar and vocabulary, he claims, are not ends in themselves, but merely components of the four basic skills, so they don't need to be given much emphasis in testing. I thought that was an interesting idea.

If you're a teacher looking for a book to help you with your test writing skills, I can recommend this one.

TESOL

The book is excellent for the "pure" language teacher with a TESOL background (not Education) and is attempting to design assessments for likeminded practitioners in the field. If this is your setting I think that this book will be ideal for you.

Hughes is also aware that these tests, and tests in general, need to be taken with a dose of salt. I am finding this book hard to review as I have 15 years now in the field. So here it goes:

If you are new to TESOL/ESL it may well be a 5

Language Schools and Colleges with TESOL Departments it is a 5: even if for discussion

A veteran teacher looking for ideas and a bit of testing theory a solid 4 and perhaps a 5

A implicit oriented testing advocate whom does not believe in teaching discrete points a 1 - 3

I think it is a worthwhile read. We will have different takes on such issues - a TESOL instructor should read this and have in on the bookshelf.
