Excellent resource for teaching secondary school students

I have been using this text as a resource for a middle school (7th and 8th grades) computational science class focusing on agent-based modeling. The first projects (mushroom hunters and butterfly hill-climbing) have provided rich experiences for my students. This is my first chance to teach this sort of modeling using NetLogo--after many years of teaching with StarLogo--and it has been a real pleasure to see a text oriented towards experimentation with ABMs in a language with such a gentle learning curve become available. I intend to use the text itself in a more advanced course for high schoolers in the fall.

Best book for learning Agent-Based Modeling

This is a very well written introduction to agent-based modeling. The authors are luminaries in the field and this book provides a very useful, clear, and effective introduction to practical modeling. The choice of Netlogo as the programming language is very wise, as it lets the reader quickly get to work writing models without getting bogged down in programming details. This book is suitable for a text in a formal course, or as a self-study guide. The emphasis on ODD (Overview, Design, Details) approach to designing and documenting models is very helpful and there are good examples throughout of using the ODD description to replicate models used in published research.

I recommend this book both as a textbook for teaching agent-based modeling and as a reference book for anyone working in the field.

This book is the second of two volumes designed to help students learn the meaning and writing of the 3,000 most frequently used simplified Chinese characters. (A parallel set of volumes has been prepared for traditional characters.) The 1,500 characters introduced in Book 1 include the top 1,000 by frequency, plus another 500 best learned at an early stage. Book 2 adds the remaining 1,500 characters to complete the set.
The lessons of Book 2 have been arranged in such a way that they may be studied either after those of Book 1 or simultaneously with them. Students who wish to focus initially on the 1,000 most frequently used characters in the language can do so by studying Book 1 before moving on to Book 2. Many, if not most, learners will find this preferable. Students who wish to apply the logical ordering found in these pages to the entire list of 3,000 characters from the very beginning can take the more exacting, but also more rationally satisfying, approach of studying the parallel lessons of the two volumes together. 
 The lessons in this book are followed by two short, additional sections, one that introduces a number of “compounds,” or characters that are best learned in pairs, and another that adds two “postscripts.” The book also includes a number of comprehensive indexes that are designed to facilitate work with both volumes.
Of central importance to the approach found in these pages is the systematic arranging of characters in an order best suited to memory. In the Chinese writing system, strokes and simple components are nested within relatively simple characters. These characters, in turn, can serve as parts of more complicated characters, and so on. Taking advantage of this allows a logical ordering, making it possible for students to approach most new characters with prior knowledge that can greatly facilitate the learning process. 
Guidance and detailed instructions are provided all along the way. Students are taught to employ “imaginative memory” to associate each character’s component parts or “primitive elements” with one another and with a key word that has been carefully selected to represent an important meaning of the character. This is accomplished through creation of a “story” that engagingly ties the primitive elements and key word together. In this way, the collections of dots, strokes and components that make up the characters are associated in memorable ways, dramatically shortening the time required for learning and helping prevent characters from slipping out of memory.

Heisig is an undertaking...

The review below seems to be annoyed by the lack of mnemonics given, but as the author states in the first book, it is better to create your own mnemonics. The author gives hundreds of mnemonics in Book 1, but by Book 2 you have to create your own. I've completed Book 1, and this is a much better method. Heisig is a long, probably one year, commitment, so this is not for a casual learner. If you don't have Book 1, this book won't be as useful.

Final point: Heisig's books are invaluable for giving elements of characters that are not characters themselves, but reoccur a lot.

An excellent, predictable continuation of Book 1 for serious Chinese students

If you have started learning Chinese characters using Heisig's method, continuing with this book is a no-brainer. The layout is identical to book 1: characters are introduced in 55 lessons as natural combinations of smaller character parts. This is supposed to make it easier to memorize. Included are a few of the mneumonic stories that filled the first book, but mostly you are left to come up with your own stories. But honestly, by the time you reach book 2, you should know 1500 characters and 1500 stories, so inventing more shouldn't be too difficult. I do wish the authors had included more mneumonics in the early chapters to aid students who use book 1 and 2 simultaneously (hence 4 stars instead of 5).

You can get a list of the characters and their pronunciation online, so technically this book is not "required." But I highly recommend it because the authors point out important details of meaning or writing for many characters that you would not know just by reading the index. If you are a serious student of Chinese Hanzi, this book is highly recommended.

I have loved this series

I have loved this series!! I was so excited for the next book to come out. As I read the story I loved the direction the author was taking, and then the book ended. I was so disappointed that after 3 books all the reader got was an epilogue of couple actually together, no wedding or courtship. I felt like chapters are missing. The cover of the book is a picture of a wedding yet we don't get any information about the wedding just that it took place. I still like the story but if your going to take 3 books to bring a couple together I would hope it would not end so abruptly.

I love Karey White's books and could hardly put this one down, wondering how long it would take Angus to come to his senses :) I want to quote the advice that his mom and dad gave him, but I'm afraid it would give away a little of the ending.

So cool to read a "clean book" that has a fun plot, besides!

What a Perfect Conclusion!

When I first heard the premise for The Husband Maker series, I knew this could be a huge hit. After reading all three books, I can say with certainty that I was right!

The Wife Maker is the third installment in this unique series. (The books definitely need to be read in order!) After getting to know Charlotte in the first two books and being heartbroken (twice!), I came into this book needing (!!!) Charlotte to get her happy ending. I knew based on the title that surely it would happen, but Karey White doesn't just give it to us. No, Charlotte (and the readers) certainly had to work for it.

Based on where the previous two books took us, I wasn't sure that there would be sufficient tension to really warrant a third installment. Let me assure you, I was wrong on that note. The Wife Maker was equal parts drama and romance, and I was anxious to see exactly how everything would end.

I've been thoroughly impressed with this entire series, and The Wife Maker is the perfect conclusion. I can't wait to see what Karey White has up her sleeve next! [5 stars]

About the Author
Pearl S. Buck (1892–1973) was a bestselling and Nobel Prize–winning author. Her classic novel The Good Earth (1931) was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and William Dean Howells Medal. Born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, Buck was the daughter of missionaries and spent much of the first half of her life in China, where many of her books are set. In 1934, civil unrest in China forced Buck back to the United States. Throughout her life she worked in support of civil and women’s rights, and established Welcome House, the first international, interracial adoption agency. In addition to her highly acclaimed novels, Buck wrote two memoirs and biographies of both of her parents. For her body of work, Buck received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, the first American woman to have done so. She died in Vermont.

Pearl Buck's genuine humanity bridges east west gap-incredib

Pearl Buck sensitively bridges the gap between the US and Asia as she explains her life's experience living in China during the Communist Revolution where the ideas for her books were born. An incredible book for women ! Pearl is like a pillar of strenghth. As a Woman, mother, and Christian; she finds hope and faith and compassion in times of dispair. Her reports and biography are intellectually satisfying. A must read...perfect snowy day book.

A Nobel Prize winning author's memoirs

Not a chronological autobiography, "My Several Worlds" is exactly that--Pearl Buck, born in the US, raised in China, tells us about her life abroad and at home. Her missionary parents took her to China as a small child, and she traveled the world later. She only hints at very personal and painful events: the birth of her daughter with PKU (Phenylketonuria, a disease that causes retardation if not controlled with a special diet--unknown at that time) and a divorce as well. We do learn about the founding of her Amerasian orphan adoption agency, placing the unwanted children of Korean women and American soldiers, about her Nobel Prize for "The Good Earth", and about life in China from the end of the Boxer Rebellion and the reign of the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi to the republic of Chiang Kai-Shek before the Communist Revolution.
If you have read any of Pearl Buck's novels, this is a must-read to provide valuable background for the author's life.

Pearl S Buck is a woman of our times

Just finished Pearl S. Buck's memoir "My Several Worlds," written in 1954. It is one of those books where you learn something on every page.

Mrs. Buck was very progressive in her views on a variety of topics, from the trivial -- for example, kids are over-scheduled these days and aren't given time for creative play (this written in 1954) and we should be eating more whole grains, to the history-altering: the USA should stay out of Indo-china (yep, 1954 again). Her understanding of the American psyche and how it could only lead to missed opportunities with China and Asia is spot-on (as it did). Her plea for acceptance of mixed-race and out-of wedlock children is heart-breaking as some progress has been made but oh the emotional pain.

Some stuff makes you wince (the military is a cause of much homosexuality because the sexes need to mix) but overall she is a very modern thinker.

Her writing is not easy reading. I think it is a bit dense for today's tastes but if you slow down it is to be savored.

From reading a review of the new cultural biographyPearl S. Buck: A Cultural Biography of Mrs. Buck I was sad to learn that she was VERY unhappy in the first marriage, her father was a misogynistic jerk and that she suffered from depression. You would not know this from "My Several Worlds." You would think she was the most positive person on earth. You learn through clues that her daughter is developmentally disabled ("the child did not grow") and that her first marriage was not happy. i guess people were polite back then and did not share their troubles with the world (and cable networks didn't exist with so much airtime to fill.)

I am so glad I read this book. I love her and admire her for her contribution to humanity. I wish there were more people like her! Read this book and enjoy!!!
