*I'M FROM BRAZIL AND I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LANGUAGE BARRIER.* I bought ''TRM'' for Kindle, ''TRM'' takes an in depth look at the technique and research with intelligence potential. Even more, this book presented methodology of building brain power independent of smart drug or behavior change (tracking, control, thinking, reiteration). In this sense this book was easy to read and the chapter names let you study your areas of interests.

This book goes deep in the cognitive enhancement science, but I will call it a guide or maybe semitechnical overview (I don't know) so it has no Anthony Simola's personal voice or details of any his personal experiments that he has done (but I don't know this). He is neutral and has anger (or critism but I think personally he goes too far) with computer brain games, such as Lumosity for example, he thinks they are not effective with ''very weak'' research. Well maybe the author is a very weak person, who knows!

Also I have a biochemistry background (diploma USP Universidade de São Paulo) and Anthony Simola recommended this very high intake with supplements. Even with medical warning, he is responsible for this recommendation. In the end I wanted more and there are even better other books on Amazon.

Interesting and Inspired

Simola's guide to cognitive enhancement has done so much more for me than simply allowing me to think clearer (which it completely has). Not only have I seen an improvement in my critical thinking, but I've noticed a renewed vitality as well. The book is comprehensive to the point where improving your mental health involves improving your physical well being too. I particularly enjoyed his chapters on the supplements and the relationship between energy and eastern dietary practices (the Sattvic diet aka The Gandhi Diet).

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to increase their mental and physical energy!

A Comprehensive Approach to Cognitive Enhancement

As is intelligence is this book manifold. The book discusses a wide range of different aspects of cognitive enhancement varying from memorization techniques (I hihgly recommend using these in your studying) to nootropics and mastering energy with Eastern practices. Its comprehensive approach offers much to reflect and chew. I personally enjoyed reading the parts on smart drugs and lucid dreaming and the whole final section of the book addressing the interesting future of cognitive enhancement.

Informative, well rounded study of the FARC

I came across this book while doing research for my graduate program. I found the book to be extremely insightful and informative on the FARC, presenting firsthand and alternate perspectives of the group. I appreciated that the author detailed not only human rights abuses committed by the FARC, but those committed by paramilitaries (the majority) and even by government forces - illustrating how the Colombian people are caught in a self-perpetuating destructive cycle between all the conflicting parties. This book was a great source for my research and an interesting read on its own. I highly recommend.

An Overview of the Armed Struggle in Colombia

Gary Leech uses original sources and key interviews in writing this book on the history and evolution of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the FARC, from its inception to where the organization stands today. The FARC is Latin America's oldest and largest insurgency organization and has existed for almost five decades and will probably continue too operate for at least another two if true social and economic reforms do not happen in Colombia. We read of the origins of this insurgency and its adaptability over time too the forces it opposes in Colombia.

What started out as a grass roots supported guerrilla movement who had the interest of the repressed rural population has involved into a strong self-sufficient army and over the decades seems too have disconnected some what from the people. But with the economic and military aid being brought too bare on the FARC over the last decade by the United States it seems to be heading back toward its original ideological basis. Though not involved in the actual international drug trade they do derive a substantial income from taxing the drug trade. This has caused the media and western government to classify the FARC as narco-terroist.

But as the facts as presented in this book show it would be wrong too use this category for the FARC. This rebel group has been responsible for many human rights violations which have diminished dramatically since most of the infractions that from the FARC are the kidnapping; this is not too intimate that they have not committed atrocities. And seventy-six percent of all the real human rights violations were carried out by government supported paramilitary organizations and now the military and police force of Colombia. It is with government approval or knowledge that there will be no reprisal when entire villages are rounded up by the government.

The author shows us that the non-profit organizations that kept actually records on the incidents use too report the actual numbers and the FARC was a small percentage of the violations. But we do see how the government of Colombia and the Media in general distorts most of the human rights violations and label them wrongly as the work of the FARC. There is no question that the Colombian authorities, the paramilitaries and the FARC have all committed human rights violation and perpetuate this violence. But the true numbers and who is responsible should be reported. The government of Colombia have displaced almost five million people and this is not headline news.

According too the author the FARC was willing to negotiate a true peace accord with the government, yet the government refuses to include any real reform in there discussions and limit it too disarming the FARC and the FARC would not agree too a country wide cease fire because of the paramilitary groups. From Leech's account we also see that the FARC has tried too do more good for the majority of the people of Colombia with infrastructure projects and the like than the government ever has. Though not reported the government does work on infrastructure or the cities would not be sustainable. It is ironic that the FARC build a bridge and convince farmer too stop growing coca for cocaine production and to grow the less profitable food produce. And then the government bombs the bridge making it impossible for those same farmers to get their product to market.

This book, though short, will give you a strong foundation with which to begin too study the FARC and government of Colombia. Now that the United States see's Colombia as a major area of its geopolitical position it is hard too see how the true social and economic reforms will be brought about that will unite the country and stop the violence. Even if the Colombian military with the funding and help of the United States were too succeed in destroying the FARC the violence would continue as violent criminal enterprises formed all over those regions from the unemployed and displaced; as have happened in other countries.n All sides have to take responsibility for the violence and atrocities they have committed.

What is the reality in Colombia? I think one would need too gather more information from other sources. But the above review, as expected, is based on this book and not other sources. Yet it seems like a good overview and worth the read.

About the Author
Bruce Mitchell is Fellow Emeritus of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. His books include A Guide to Old English written with Fred C. Robinson (fifth edition, 1992), On Old English (1988), and the two volume Old English Syntax (1985). He is currently working with Fred C. Robinson on a new edition of Beowulf.

Who's Afraid of Beowulf?

If you're fascinated by English literature and language in general, as I was, but intimidated by the obscure vocabulary and inflections of "Old Anguish," this is your book. It's not a "for Dummies" manual, but it's more reader-friendly than a college text. It introduces all the fundamentals of the language, along with an overview of the culture that produced the tongue. It overlaps the more formal text, "Guide to Old English" (by Mitchell & Robinson) in some places word for word, but "Invitation" is much more chatty and fun. Mitchell's love for Old English is infectious, as is his conviction that it's not as hard to learn as it looks. By the time I was finished, I had a good beginner's command of Old English and a thirst to learn more.

An outstanding book.

As a student of various languages, but a newcomer to the study of Old English, I found this book an unintimidating but, nevertheless, comprehensive and in-depth introduction to the language. Mr. Mitchell begins by tracing the origins of our erstwhile obscure tongue, which has attained the status of a latter-day Latin in terms of its widespread use by native and non-native speakers alike in numerous environments. Unfortunately, many or most native speakers of English have little or no knowledge of the language in its earlier forms. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to enrich his own knowledge of the language through the study of its roots. It is a study not only of language, but history as well, a point which Mr. Mitchell highlights in such a way as to make this "dead" language come alive. The author grabs the attention of the reader from the first page, more than I thought possible in a didactic book which, of necessity, must teach the rudimentary elements of grammar, and manages to keep it even through the introduction of paradigms. This is in part due to his success in introducing these paradigms in the context of the language in use, as opposed to in uninterrupted pages of dry, grammatical tables which I have found in many other books. Already in the foreword, Mr. Mitchell has begun to give the reader a feel for the language by quoting simple passages and providing literal translations for them. An excellent introduction, and invitation, to a fascinating language, foreign and yet strangely familiar.

A really interesting book!

It's been hard work, but I've put in some elbow grease and made it.
A very readable introduction to Old English language, culture, art, and society. Nearly every aspect of Anglo-Saxon life is touched on, supported with carefully cited sources (usually primary), and a good selection of illustrations. The author's sincere passion for Old English always comes through, and he's very good about encouraging the student. When things are going to be a little hard, you're warned that you've got to just slog through it, and you are guided down the path.
Another nice thing about this book that should be pointed out is that it has a lot to offer people who aren't especially interested in learning Old English, but instead more engaged by the culture and life of the Anglo-Saxon people. Mitchell's expositions are fascinating and feature copious examples from both academic literature and primary sources. You don't need to know a lick of Old English to learn a lot from this book!
I would have appreciated a few touches, however. My primary complaint is that the translations often weren't literal enough. While this made them readable, I had to very frequently second-guess the translations while trying my hand at my own, and would have liked more chances to test my work directly to be sure I was on track. I'm not convinced that, especially in the discussions of language directly, I wouldn't have had an easier time with klutzier and more literal examples.
I'd also like to see all-color plates, in a future edition.
All said and done, this was an immensly satisfying process-- I'm not adept at Old English (one never learns a language all at once anyway, and let's face it: how on Earth do you get any practice if you're not in school? Nevermind what the Masters at Oxford do deciding just /how/ to inflect a long-dead tongue), but with every increase in comprehension I felt my understanding of both modern English and German considerably enhanced.
Above all, this was for me-- for now a hobbyist-- exactly the thing I wanted for some self-study. It might be that for you, too. I assure you that the first time you get a snip from Beowulf just right, it will put a big smile in your heart.

Announcing six more weeks of winter earns Groundhog both friends and grumblers.
When Groundhog sees his shadow, half the animals cheer, and the other half groan. But things really go downhill when spring finally arrives. Bear and Squirrel see nap-happy Hare give Groundhog a basket of berries as a gift for the extra weeks of slumber, so Squirrel invites him to a ballgame, hoping to cozen Groundhog into declaring an early spring next year. Though he initially protests, "I don't actually control the weather. I just report it," he finds that he's enjoying the attention. Pretty soon, Groundhog gives in, and his social calendar fills up with picnics, bonfires, and more ballgames. Stricken by conscience as winter nears, he goes to the barn for advice from Owl, who simply says—wisely—that Groundhog got himself into this problem and must solve it himself. When Groundhog Day rolls around again, he risks disfavor by telling the truth and invites his friends to his home for a warm-up and some snacks. And so they pass much of those six extra weeks of winter, comfortably. Faulkner's anthropomorphic animals and vibrant colors recall Uncle Wiggly, and the illustrations are packed with humorous details that repay rereadings. Remenar's graceful prose and the subtlety of her message, pitched to older preschoolers and early-elementary students, are a good match.

What Will Groundhog Do?

Moms and dads, teachers and librarians just got a fun new book to read aloud on Groundhog's Day. Groundhog has a dilemma: half of his friends want him to call spring early and half want another six weeks of winter. They just don't get that Groundhog doesn't make the weather, he just predicts it.

Groundhog's friends try to bribe him with food and invitations to sway Groundhog to think their way. And Groundhog succumbs. Who can resist a big piece of berry pie? I can't. As Groundhog's Day gets closer, Groundhog realizes that he is in a pickle. He seeks out advice from the wisest animal in the forest: Owl.

Love the faces of these animals and the details in the scenes by the illustrator who is married to the author. This book is a fruitful combination of their talents. Children will love the illustrations as they are vibrant and alive.

So, how will Groundhog solve his dilemma? This book fosters being yourself and telling the truth to your friends which is a good lesson to learn. The story has good pacing and flow and enough of a central conflict to keep a child's interest. Hope this duo write another book together - they are talented!

Wonderful story, lesson and art.

I had to read it before it was a gift for my young granddaughter. I loved the book, it's story line and the artwork is fantastic. She will love being read this book. Lots of wonderful faces and eyes to make her smile (she is only 5 months old now). I almost didn't want to give it away.

GROUNDHOG'S DILEMMA contains a lesson, no doubt, but the story is so carefully crafted, it isn't heavy handed in any way. It's a joy to read, again and again. The adorable illustrations beautifully complement the text and are full of subtle details that invite young readers (and adults) to pause and enjoy the fun, unexpected surprises to be found on each page.
