Goals of the Program
God Cares for Us prepares your child to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist. Throughout the year, your child will learn many signs of God’s loving care and practical ways to use his or her talents to share God’s love with others. The program leads the children to respond joyfully to God’s call to give themselves in love to him and to others.

A Family Program
A separate Reconciliation booklet, Jesus Gives Me His Peace, and Mass booklet, Jesus Gives Himself, will help you prepare your child for the sacraments. Two family celebrations in this book are immediate preparation for your child’s celebration of Reconciliation (page 82d) and First Communion (page 126d).
Each unit in this book begins with a letter home that summarizes the message to be presented in class. Each chapter highlights one aspect of the message presented each week. The Building Family Faith sections summarize the chapter’s message and suggest related family activities under four topics.

Reflect gives a scriptural reading that can be done by a parent or older child in the family.
Discuss as a Family opens discussion about bringing our faith into daily life.
Pray sums up the message for the week in a short prayer of the heart, which all can say daily. This prayer might be copied and posted on the refrigerator or a mirror or added to meal prayers or other family prayers.
Do provides ideas for sharing at meals, playing games, and enjoying family activities related to the message of the chapter. Storybooks available in public libraries are sometimes suggested.

Review with your child the text and booklet pages covered in class. Each unit ends with Family Feature pages that suggest a family custom and provide review activities.

Ten Principles to Nurture Your Child’s Faith
    1.    Listen with your heart as well as with your head.
    2.    Encourage wonder and curiosity in your child.
    3.    Coach your child in empathy early. It’s a building block for morality.
    4.    Display religious artwork in your home. This will serve as a steady witness that faith is an important part of life.
    5.    Gently guide your child to a life of honesty.
    6.    Whenever appropriate, model for your child how to say “I’m sorry.”
    7.    Eat meals together regularly as a family. It will be an anchor for your child in days to come.
    8.    Pray together in good times and bad. Worship regularly together as a family.
    9.    Be generous to those who need help. Make helping others an important focus of your life as a family.
    10.    See your child for the wonder that God made. Communicate your conviction that your child was created for a noble purpose—to serve God and others in this life and to be happy with God forever in the next.

A mystery set in the Middle East

I love reading anything set in the middle east, so when i saw the desert on the cover, I picked it up without realizing what the book is about. I was surprised when later I read the synopsis carefully and noted that it was a thriller. I don't know many thrillers set in the desert. Imagine my surprise when I found out that `Night of the Mirage' is the book `Finding Nouf` with a different name, a book which had been on my wish list for some time.

A rich 16 year old Nouf goes missing taking with her a truck and a camel. Assuming she is either kidnapped or has ran off into the desert, her family takes help of a family friend Nayir who knows a lot about the desert. Nayir takes help of Katya, Nouf's brother's fiance, who works in the forensic department. As Nayir and Katya learn more about Nouf and her life, we as readers get to see inside the life of the rich of Jeddah and also get a glimpse of a society which likes to keep its women under wraps and their family honor intact under any circumstances.

Set in Jeddah, this book offers a unique setting which the author has bought to life. It feels like you are actually inside Jeddah and are looking at real people and real issues. The Night of the Miraj is not just a mystery but it also shows the changing face of the society when it comes to women and their position in it.

Recommended. I'm really looking forward to City of Veils, the follow up to The Night of the Miraj.

Same book, different title.

I am posting this so you don't make the same mistake I did.

The Night of the Mi'raj and Finding Nouf are the same book. I think "Night of the Mi'raj" is the name as it was published in England or something. It apparently was an ill-suited title so they changed it to something more appropriate before publishing it over here.

I read Finding Nouf; liked it; searched Amazon for other titles by author Zoe Ferraris; and then ordered Night of the Mi'raj, understandably thinking it was a different novel with a different story, only to find when I sat down to read it that it was the exact same book with a different title. %$@#&!

Siddhartha's life takes him on a journey toward enlightenment. Afire with youthful idealism, the Brahmin joins a group of ascetics, fasting and living without possessions. Meeting Gotama the Buddha, he comes to feel this is not the right path, though he also declines joining the Buddha's followers. He reenters the world, hoping to learn of his own nature, but instead slips gradually into hedonism and materialism. Surfeited and disgusted, he flees from his possessions to become a ferryman's apprentice, learning what lessons he can from the river itself. Herman Hesse's 1922 Bildungsroman parallels the life of Buddha and seems to argue that lessons of this sort cannot be taught but come from one's own struggle to find truth. Beautiful novella, but this edition is unreadable due to many, many typos

By all means, buy the book, it's incredible, but don't buy this one. Hesse's words and W.K. Marriott's classic translation are butchered in this Simon & Brown printing -- "if" for "of", "nit" for "not", "heard" instead of "head" -- all in one paragraph. Yeesh.

Great book but don't buy this edition!

Siddhartha is a great book. This edition, however, is perhaps the worst edition of any book that I have ever--ever--seen published. The number of typos, grammatical mistakes, syntax errors, and other errors is astounding. The publishing house, Simon & Brown, should be embarrassed and ashamed.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse changed my life and it will change yours too.

This book is a classic. In high school, I was told of this book by Andrew McMahon, of whom I was big fan of from his days in the band Something Corporate. He has a tattoo on his arm that says 'The River is Everywhere.' When describing the tattoo, he says it's a quote from Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. After reading the book, I realized that that phrase itself isn't in the book but the meaning is. To this day, that quote still strikes me deeply.

It wasn't an immediate change after I read Siddhartha but in the few years that followed, I slowly began to pick up shamatha meditation. Through the process of learning how to meditate, I picked up the Dhammapada. Through the different translations, I discovered Jack Kerouac and his version of Siddhartha, titled 'Wake up!'. Through the Jack Kerouac and the beat generation, I discovered eastern philosophy, a heart for travel, an interest in yoga, vegetarianism and ultimately veganism, The Road, and all sorts of different kinds of music. Through the changes of interest, I discovered a monastery of Theravada Buddhists within 15 miles of home that a dear friend built by hand with another monk. Eventually, I even met the Dalai Lama and many of the Tibetan monks that followed him. To this day, I meditate daily. I've found new friends, made new connections, and have a newfound respect for all people and the Earth itself. Siddhartha by Herman Hesse planted the seed. This book changed my life and it will change yours too

A suspenseful but slow read

When Claire, a nature photographer/journalist, bumps into a gorgeous hunk at a diner in Shady Grove, CA, where she lived as a child, he seems familiar, and he is. He's a boy she had a mad crush on when she was nine years old, Jed Lafferty. When they get to talking he learns that she's in the area to photograph the giant redwoods and combine with with an article about a group of scientists and researchers camping in the woods after news of a recent Bigfoot sighting. Jed's a free-spirit, he's taking a break from what was his summer job, running a wilderness retreat before heading to the place he spends the winter, Donner Summit near Lake Tahoe, where he works out of a ski rental shop offering backcountry ski tours.

Jed and Claire agree to spend part of their time together at the same campground, hiking and hanging out while Claire pursues her assignment. The relationship builds very slowly--Claire is nothing if not cautious with her heart, she has one annulled marriage and two broken engagements in her past, but the attraction between her and Jed is certainly there. It turns out that her former husband is one of the researchers on site looking for evidence of Bigfoot, and then she bumps into her old high school boyfriend, Dallas, and a former co-worker and journalist, Preston. It's old home week until she returns to her RV and starts finding marriage-related "gifts", the first one wedding bells draped over her RV. She assumes it's a prank, and brushes it off, but the occurrences and "gifts" grow more frequent and invasive, and the messages her stalker leaves, about keeping her vows, grown bolder.

There are certainly more than enough suspects to go around, including Jed, and figuring out who Claire's stalker is comprises most of the body of the novel, as does Claire's on-again, off-again romance with Jed, which progresses very slowly, as 35-year old Jed, who's commitment shy, and Claire who's been living a nomadic existence wants to settle down try to figure out how to make their relationship work.

The suspense in this whodunit is definitely there, as is the romance, although I did find Jed's commitment phobia and his show of jealous possessiveness rather immature for a man of that age. Additionally, this reader wished that the author would step up the pacing--this novel moves so slowly that what should have been an exciting, page-turning and suspenseful read became an exercise in waiting for something to happen and waiting for Jed to grow up. Ms. Gallant definitely has skills, but the tedious action in this novel certainly detracted from my enjoyment.

To run into the biggest crush of your younger days, and to find out, he is single, hotter than ever, and a nice guy, and you both are going to be in the same location for a few days - sounds like fun, right?! But then, you run into your ex, and not only one, but another, and... Things get rather uncomfortable and awkward after a while.
And to make matters even worse, it seems one of the old flames is still holding on a torch for you, and rather odd, stalker way, leaving you messages and gifts that makes the situation not only creepy, but dangerous as well.

Even though the story has a disturbing mystery to be solved, mostly the tale has a focus on Jed and Claire, and their life goals, future desires, and possibility make a relationship work between them. The give and take is fascinating, and the topics and concerns they have are very much life like. The sacrifices that one has to make when in a committed relationship, career, fun, and stable living, all things people in their adult years ponder on.

As they try to get Claire's job assignment fulfilled, the mystery of the stalker resolved, and are hiking and enjoying the California redwood forests, they talk about life, get to know each other again, and fall for each other. But is it enough, when their future goals are so different?

I found the story fascinating on many levels. I enjoyed the characters, their honesty, openness, and candor. The California coast the author painted in my mind was intriguing in its beauty, the small town with its folks humorous and inviting. The romance felt real and down to earth, and the conflicts they faced actual and legitimate. The mystery was tense, fearsome, and chilling. The Bigfoot and the Bigfoot believers gave something to smile about. I definitely recommend this book, and the author's easily flowing way to tell an alluring tale

Wonderful romantic suspense read

I am in awe of the scenery each books in this series with Every Vow She Breaks being no different. In this third of the series Jannine Gallant takes us into the Redwood Mountains. Speaking of the series as a whole, I am unsure if the Who's Watching Now name for the series refers to the one who is protecting the heroine or if it is because some is stalking (watching) the heroine. No matter, it is still just good reading.

Someone this time is stalking Claire. I really enjoyed that the author did not give it away in the beginning but took us along on the journey. Nail-biting suspense as I tried to discover the identity of the threat along with Claire and childhood friend, Jed. There are several suspects who could easily pose a threat to Claire.

The plot is tight but flows very smoothly with a realistic approach to how Claire and Jed once again find each other after 20 years. As for Claire, she is a strong female lead with Jed, a hot and capable protector. The suspense action is perfectly balanced with the romance. This action packed thriller is a perfect addition to this extraordinary series.

Smart Inventory Solutions - a refreshing read!

Smart Inventory Solutions was a great find! It is an excellent resource for those looking to understand and optimize inventory, spare parts in particular. It was an easy read, conversational in tone with a wealth of very practical actions including a step wise action plan for inventory optimization and cash savings. I'm a doctoral student and supply chain consultant doing research on spare parts planning and it was refreshing to read a book devoid of difficult to implement theoretical concepts. This book reflects the real world of spare parts challenges. I believe that this book can help the spare parts practitioner make a real difference.

This is a very good book

The book has explained in a very lucid and easy to read style the various nuances of inventory management and dealt specifically on engineering spares. The author has done a great job and done full justice to the title of this book delivering to the readers the underlying principles of inventory management and optimization.

Very Misleading

I bought this book because I am doing some research on the history of intelligence testing and the description stated the book covers that history in depth. In actuality, there are a few brief chapters in the history of intelligence with the remaining two-thirds of the book being about an IQ test the authors designed for a television show. No where in the description did it mention this and it is the bulk of book! Some may find their little experiment interesting, but I am severely disappointed that I bought a book claiming to be about the history of intelligence testing and instead I got a run-down of some reality TV show. Wish I hadn't underlined a few things in the very beginning or I'd return it to get my money back. I suggest changing the description of this book to be a more accurate reflection of its contents.

Chance is an act of God

This is a thin book consisting of six powerful lectures. This is appropriate since Jung's original paper on synchronicity was also a thin but powerful volume. That is the theme here- the connection of the concept of synchronicity with traditional methods of divination. However, do not make the mistake of thinking that divination represents "tame" synchronicity for there is nothing tame or predictable about it.

Von Frantz points out that all traditional civilizations have used oracles to try to ascertain the will of God. Indeed, this is perhaps one of the greatest distinctions between the modern and the traditional. In modern Westernized cultures the approach is to look at an event and then abstract a mathematical model. In traditional cultures one uses an intuitive mental model to read an event. The first way seeks control; the second seeks meaning. Therein lies a vast gulf.

It is pointed out that the unconscious knows things- things of the past and future. This breaks out into the conscious world in dreams and in synchronicity. There is a vast matrix of symbolic meaning in the unconscious and when you energize one nexus, one archetype, other related archetypes sympathetically resonate with it. These resonations break out into the "real" world of the day-to-day conscious in the form of seemingly causeless synchronicity.

It is pointed out that this sort of phenomena occurs mostly to certain "gifted" individuals. The gift consists of a weaker conscious ego that does not get in the way of the unconscious as consistently as it does with the average man or woman. This sort of person can somehow relate more to the absolute knowledge of the unconscious. It seems that it is the bright light of ego consciousness that dims access for others. When the ego is weakened (as in the ego-death of the traditional shaman) then one can dwell on the threshold. Traditionally it is stated that one only learns the secrets of life after dieing, however, if one dies in life and returns then the living can access the secret of the two worlds, of heaven and earth. This is the fenestra aeternitatis, the window into eternity.

Amazingly insightful associations

There's little doubt that von Franz was, in her own right, a genius--as was her mentor Carl Jung. Unlike Jung, whose books are brilliant but extremely difficult to read--both in style & in organization, von Franz writes beautifully & is very organized indeed. She makes points and then ties them all together in an extraordinary fashion--virtually amazing to me. She provides insights from her personal experiences as well as her interactions with Jung which are not to my knowledge available in Jung's Collected Works of C.G. Jung: 21 Volume Hardcover Set. Some of her more generic statements of note were: p. 29: "If people cannot discuss things in a detached way & relatively truthfully, it is because they are influenced by an archetype" & p. 42: "The more conscious we are the more people we can understand." More specifically to the topic at hand, she relates relative & absolute time, the Self as a field of archetypes, precognition-synchronicity-& divination, ritual & play/games, sacrifice & detachment, similarities/differences among diviners--p. 42 "all are true but all are only partial," & most interestingly considering both the duality of the relative/absolute dichotomy vs. the mystical Unity of All -- p. 98: "Jung stresses the point that since the physical & the psychic realms coincide within the synchronistic event, there must be somewhere or somehow a unitarian reality--one reality of the physical & psychic realms."

But, less philosophical and more practical (and a devastating comment on American culture), von Franz says that pp. 84-5: "If one has very primitive feelings, then one has black & white reactions: I like it, or I don't like it, and there is nothing in between; or this is good & this is bad, agreeable or disagreeable--it is an either-or reaction. That is typical for undifferentiated feeling. Thinking types, for instance, react like that, while feeling types have a kind of spectrum of feeling reactions...a spectrum reaction." This book is full of penetrating analysis & innovative, creative arguments--brilliant.

This book is incredible.
It's presented in the format of the original lectures that it was based on (Sometimes that means she repeats important points for the audience's memory, but it never hurts, and its the only stylistic oddity).
Content-wise it is mind-blowing. I like Marie Louise Von Franz so much because she takes all these obtuse ideas that Jung had, and gets them to make so much sense and have such a real life and personality and weight to them, which is often hard to get by just reading the original material straight from the horses mouth (Jung being the horse, in this case).
This is a great book about synchronicity. It spends a whole lot of time talking about integers and chance and stuff like that.
