I started this book thinking it was a historical romance and would be a quick, easy read. Instead I discovered a well written story of life on the Oregon Trail. It is a rather slow moving story that could have been edited down somewhat to quicken the pace. Marie, her husband Charles, and his twin Hester have sold Marie's plantation and decided to move to Oregon to start over. Charles is much older than Marie and seems to have no interest in her physically. Instead he treats her as a not very bright servant. The trail leader, Sam, notices that Charles doesn't seem to care for Marie and becomes interested in her romantically. This group of travelers do not seem to have as many of the hard-ships that many encountered on the trail, but it is still interesting to read how life on the Trail progressed at various stages along the way.

One thing that bothered me about the book was that it never really explained Marie and Charles' marriage. At one point she mentioned his sons from his first marriage and it seemed there was some sort of situation there, but then it was just dropped. Also, what happened to all the money from the sale of her plantation? How did she meet Charles in the first place? And if all the wealth was hers, why did she allow him to treat her so badly? There wasn't enough background information on Marie to help the reader understand her actions.

Although this book was interesting, the pace was just too slow. There were a few typos and at one point, Hester was called both Hester and Hazel in the same paragraph. I would recommend this book to those interested in travel along the Oregon Trail. For those interested in historical romance, this may not be the book for you.

The Hardships of being a Pioneer

Undesirable:The Oregon Trail is a good read. I've always liked this time period in history. Wagon trains going west and the hard work and sacrifice these people had to endure. This book explained much if this, but had a storyline of romance and hardships of being forced to go and do what a husband demanded. Also there was a bit of a mystery in this novel that was unexpected and seldom explored in acceptable behavior that certainly has always existed, but seldom mentioned in a historical fiction of this time period. I would recommend this book. It's a fast read, but enjoyable.

Timeless!

Marie Warren is headed west with her husband and his twin sister on a wagon train. She's an admirable woman, a hard worker, and devoted to her family. But she yearns for more in her marriage than her husband is willing to give. Along the trail, she'll face danger and hard truths before she can find her happiness.
Sam Granville is the leader of the wagon train escorting families to Oregon Territory. When he's sent to fetch Marie at her husband's behest, he walks into a situation he's not expecting. From that moment on, Marie continues to charm and surprise him.
Unavoidable is a wonderful historical romance with memorable characters, set against a well-researched backdrop of the hardships of the pioneer life. The ending felt a bit rushed, but all in all, this is definitely remaining on my keeper shelf.
