A suspenseful but slow read

When Claire, a nature photographer/journalist, bumps into a gorgeous hunk at a diner in Shady Grove, CA, where she lived as a child, he seems familiar, and he is. He's a boy she had a mad crush on when she was nine years old, Jed Lafferty. When they get to talking he learns that she's in the area to photograph the giant redwoods and combine with with an article about a group of scientists and researchers camping in the woods after news of a recent Bigfoot sighting. Jed's a free-spirit, he's taking a break from what was his summer job, running a wilderness retreat before heading to the place he spends the winter, Donner Summit near Lake Tahoe, where he works out of a ski rental shop offering backcountry ski tours.
Jed and Claire agree to spend part of their time together at the same campground, hiking and hanging out while Claire pursues her assignment. The relationship builds very slowly--Claire is nothing if not cautious with her heart, she has one annulled marriage and two broken engagements in her past, but the attraction between her and Jed is certainly there. It turns out that her former husband is one of the researchers on site looking for evidence of Bigfoot, and then she bumps into her old high school boyfriend, Dallas, and a former co-worker and journalist, Preston. It's old home week until she returns to her RV and starts finding marriage-related "gifts", the first one wedding bells draped over her RV. She assumes it's a prank, and brushes it off, but the occurrences and "gifts" grow more frequent and invasive, and the messages her stalker leaves, about keeping her vows, grown bolder.
There are certainly more than enough suspects to go around, including Jed, and figuring out who Claire's stalker is comprises most of the body of the novel, as does Claire's on-again, off-again romance with Jed, which progresses very slowly, as 35-year old Jed, who's commitment shy, and Claire who's been living a nomadic existence wants to settle down try to figure out how to make their relationship work.
The suspense in this whodunit is definitely there, as is the romance, although I did find Jed's commitment phobia and his show of jealous possessiveness rather immature for a man of that age. Additionally, this reader wished that the author would step up the pacing--this novel moves so slowly that what should have been an exciting, page-turning and suspenseful read became an exercise in waiting for something to happen and waiting for Jed to grow up. Ms. Gallant definitely has skills, but the tedious action in this novel certainly detracted from my enjoyment.

By Books And Spoons
To run into the biggest crush of your younger days, and to find out, he is single, hotter than ever, and a nice guy, and you both are going to be in the same location for a few days - sounds like fun, right?! But then, you run into your ex, and not only one, but another, and... Things get rather uncomfortable and awkward after a while.
And to make matters even worse, it seems one of the old flames is still holding on a torch for you, and rather odd, stalker way, leaving you messages and gifts that makes the situation not only creepy, but dangerous as well.
Even though the story has a disturbing mystery to be solved, mostly the tale has a focus on Jed and Claire, and their life goals, future desires, and possibility make a relationship work between them. The give and take is fascinating, and the topics and concerns they have are very much life like. The sacrifices that one has to make when in a committed relationship, career, fun, and stable living, all things people in their adult years ponder on.
As they try to get Claire's job assignment fulfilled, the mystery of the stalker resolved, and are hiking and enjoying the California redwood forests, they talk about life, get to know each other again, and fall for each other. But is it enough, when their future goals are so different?
I found the story fascinating on many levels. I enjoyed the characters, their honesty, openness, and candor. The California coast the author painted in my mind was intriguing in its beauty, the small town with its folks humorous and inviting. The romance felt real and down to earth, and the conflicts they faced actual and legitimate. The mystery was tense, fearsome, and chilling. The Bigfoot and the Bigfoot believers gave something to smile about. I definitely recommend this book, and the author's easily flowing way to tell an alluring tale

Wonderful romantic suspense read

I am in awe of the scenery each books in this series with Every Vow She Breaks being no different. In this third of the series Jannine Gallant takes us into the Redwood Mountains. Speaking of the series as a whole, I am unsure if the Who's Watching Now name for the series refers to the one who is protecting the heroine or if it is because some is stalking (watching) the heroine. No matter, it is still just good reading.
Someone this time is stalking Claire. I really enjoyed that the author did not give it away in the beginning but took us along on the journey. Nail-biting suspense as I tried to discover the identity of the threat along with Claire and childhood friend, Jed. There are several suspects who could easily pose a threat to Claire.
The plot is tight but flows very smoothly with a realistic approach to how Claire and Jed once again find each other after 20 years. As for Claire, she is a strong female lead with Jed, a hot and capable protector. The suspense action is perfectly balanced with the romance. This action packed thriller is a perfect addition to this extraordinary series.
